Description of  Exhibition & Associated Events:

Artist as Mother as Artist

22 April- 19 May

Featuring Nicola Canavan, Nicola Carter in collaboration with Seraina Dejaco, Paula Chambers, Amy Dignam, Rachel Fallon, Dinah Gold, Tracey Kershaw, Jessica Paige Greig, Sam Rose, Helen Sargeant, Eti Wade, Zoo Indigo.

Artist as Mother as Artist is a co-curated gallery exhibition by Sam Rose and Tracey Kershaw, featuring artworks across the disciplines of video, dance on film, photography, sculpture, drawing, print, and live art and performance documentsShowcasing fourteen local and national artists whose practice is based upon the inseparable relationship between being an artist and mother, all works featured have all been nourished, enabled, influenced and created as a consequence of the artist’s maternal experiences.

Additionally, there will be a series of professional development opportunities and public participatory events that will consider how parenthood can enhance creative thinking. These events will encourage debate and conversation, making the maternal a critical component of artistic discourse.

Artist as Mother as Artist aims to inspire child and parent collaboration and encourage artistic practice amongst mothers, who may feel a conflict between their artistic engagement and their day-to-day caring activities.

The gallery exhibition will be accompanied by four related, participatory events:

  • Dust To Bread Workshop led by Helen Sargeant:

A practical collaborative (parent and child) workshop where parents and children will bake a loaf of bread using their vacuum cleaner detritus. The loaves will be displayed as part of Artist as Mother as Artist exhibition

  •  Presentations by exhibiting artists Helen Sargeant, Paula Chambers, Jessica Paige Greig, Amy Dignam, Rachel Fallon and Project Procreate. Open presentation and discussion panel for mother artists.

Exhibition artists will give short presentations about their artistic practices, followed by open discussion and sharing platform. A light lunch will be provided. A children’s corner will be available for mothers with accompanying children. Two qualified childminders will be available.

  • Child as critic workshop for family audiences with children

A fun workshop where children will respond to Artist as Mother as Artist gallery exhibition. Light refreshments will be provided.

  • Public gallery talks and walkthroughs by Sam Rose and Tracey Kershaw
